We Are Here: Women In Art In Cambridge Colleges - 6th March - 24th April 2020
A unique opportunity to view college art collections which are relatively unfamiliar to outsiders. They comprise a mixture of gifts and commissions, reflecting the patronage of founders and alumni as well as memorialising heads of house and fellows. This exhibition provides the earliest images of female role models available to the women of the university. Today, over three decades after all colleges voted to accept women, the visual representation of women and the appearance of art by women have both proceeded apace, albeit unevenly in different colleges. Scroll below or click here to find out much more about this excellent exhibition.

Rembrandt and the Nude - Fitzwilliam Museum, Trumpington Street, Cambridge - 24th September 2019 - 23rd February 2020
Rembrandt made etchings of female nudes during two distinct periods of his career: in the 1630s, and another two decades later. He depicted his models naturalistically, naar ‘t leven (‘from life’), in informal poses, concentrating on the sensuousness of their flesh rather than on the idealised female body. From shortly after Rembrandt’s death up until the mid-20th century this unidealised treatment was fiercely attacked by critics, who used words such as ‘intolerable’, ‘ill-shaped’ and ‘monstrous’ to describe his departure from the classical norms of beauty. This exhibition challenges this view, drawing attention to the beauty and power of Rembrandt’s treatment of the female form. To find out more click here to go to the museum's website.

Oscar Murillo - Kettles Yard - 9th April - 23rd June 2019
Oscar Murillo is a contemporary Colombian painter and installation artist. Working in a wide-ranging practice that incorporates a variety of different media and techniques, Murillo investigates the cross-cultural ties in a globalized economy. He is noted for his use of text, recycled materials, and fragments collected from his studio. As a painter, he uses a scribbling method of applying looping lines and the occasional word to the canvas, which is then slowly covered in debris by being left out in the open of his studio, a process the artist has likened to aging cheese. Tate Modern - Dorothea Tanning - 27 February - 9th June 2019
Last Thursday Evelyn went to the Tate to see this exhibition. Although she readily admits Surrealism isn't her favourite genre she was delighted with what she saw. Dorothea Tanning's (1910 - 2012) work always asks us to look beyond the obvious. As a young New York artist in the 1930s she discovered surrealism and what she describes as the 'limitless expanse of possibility' is explored in all of her work. This exhibition focuses on key themes across her long and extraordinary career. If this is out of your comfort zone, do as Evelyn did, surprise yourself and take a look at this extraordinary artist and her stunning work, for further details click here.
