Monday Studio Christmas Lunch - The Red Lion - February 21st 2022 !!!!
We have often postponed our Christmas lunch into the New Year, usually due to the fact that finding a venue and date in the run up to Christmas can be tricky. These past two years, like many others, we have battled with Covid-19 so to hedge our bets we successfully moved the festivities to February. The food and drink flowed and the conversation was animated a super lunch was had by all. Thank you to the Red Lion for making us feel so welcome.

Johannes Vermeer
View of Delft - article by Paul Simons
Astronomers solved a mystery surrounding Joannes Vermeer's painting View of Delft which shows the city in exquisite detail, a masterpiece of light and shade on a day of sunshine and clouds.
Debate had long raged about when the picture was painted. Then a team led by the astronomer Professor Donald Olson did an intensive study, which revealed telltale clues. Their evidence suggested that Vermeer created his artwork from the second floor of an inn overlooking the city at 8am on September 3, 1659, or possibly the year before.
It was known that Vermeer stayed at Delft in an inn, and using historical maps the scientists found his view was looking north, and the pattern of sunlight and shade also revealed that it was a morning scene. Google Earth was then used to map the distances and angles of the landscapes in the painting, giving a measuring stick for the entire scene.
One key landmark was the octagonal tower of Nieuwe Kerk, the New Church. Historians had claimed that Vermeer had enlarges the tower but measurements of the picture, the real church tower and high-resolution photographs from a similar vantage point all revealed the church was painted with astonishing accuracy.
The tower also shows a sliver of sunlight that skims one colum just enough to illuminate a neighbouring column, allowing the precise angle of the sun to be calculated. That allowed the sun's position in the sky and the shadows cast to be computed, and marked the time of day at 8am local time. There were only two date ranges when the shadows were possible, between April 6 and 8 or between September 3 and 4. As the trees in the picture are in full leaf, that ruled out April.
The year was also revealed from the lack of bells in Vermeer's church tower. The bells seen today were in stalled in 1660, dating the picture to 1659 or the previous year.

Finally it is time to meet up and paint. Members of Monday Studio have been busy trying to keep up the momentum, inspiration and creativity at home during this very long lockdown. It has been a very long 14 months with only a brief respite in September of 2020. Qutations and challenges have been met. Old skills have been perfected new skills and processes have been investigated and many new pieces of artwork have been made. There should be lots to see at our up and coming exhibition on 3rd and 4th July where we will be exhibiting in real life instead of virtually, something we are all greatly looking froward to.

Frieda Khalo
“Making herself up Exhibition” 2018 V and A Back in 2018 Angela went to this exhibition and as our quotation for this week is from Frieda we thought a virtual, belated look at the exhibition would be interesting. It was based on the remarkable discovery in 2004 of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's clothing and personal possessions in the Casa Azul (Blue House), her life-long home. Hidden away for 50 years following her death in 1954, this was the first time they had been shown outside Mexico. Her husband had boarded up the room when she died. It was a fascinating to see personal belongings that had been used which gave her inspiration for her art work. Frida suffered with polio as a child and then later was in a severe bus accident in 1925 which left Kahlo in lifelong pain. Confined to bed for three months following the accident, Kahlo began to paint. She became famous through her photography, art and sculptures in South and North America. Frida often dressed in colourful Mexican dresses and jewellery and dramatic make up as an art form. At the exhibition there were many personal articles, make up, perfume and back and leg splints and many self-portraits in which she often painted roots and flowers attached to her body. Click here to take a look at what the exhibition had to offer. Click here to watch a short YouTube video about the exhibition produced by the Art Channel. |

Snugbury's Ice Creams! - One of our members Sue, together with her sisters, can be seen standing in front of a rather unusual art installation. The bee is 30 foot high and made out of straw bales and metal work.
Why Sue and her sisters?, Their maiden name was Bees and the sculpture was compelling on every level, not to mention the ice-cream!
The installation is at Snugburys ice-cream makers Nantwich in Cheshire where each year they have a new theme and this year it is bees. The bees, in much smaller
versions, are every where and the litterbins are bee hives. Great fun, irresistible and most definitely a talking point. From Peter Rabbit to Darlecks click here to go to Snugbury's web page and see previous years installations.

They went to and saw an art installation in Knin Fortress by Tonka Jelaca Marijancevic who lives and works in Split making installation in laminated cotton and also wood, metal, wire and terracotta (top four photos). To see more of this artist's work click here. Even if your Croatian is not up to scratch, the website is easy to work your way around. In Zadar they went to see the Salvador Dali Exhibition in the Rectors Palace, very interesting colours because of his history with Catalonia. The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and The Ikon Museum Birmingham - April 2019
Rosemary visited two galleries, the Ikon Gallery in the rejuvenated Gas Street Basin, and the main Birmingham Art Gallery.
The Ikon Gallery had an exhibition by Hew Locke called 'Here's the Thing'. This was most striking, especially the flotilla of boats suspended from the ceiling. You can read all about it by clicking here This page includes audio tours and an interview with Hew Locke. Well worth watching!
The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is a world renowned venue and was exhibiting Leonardo's drawings. You can see the Leonardo display and further information by clicking here
Rosemary highly recommends a visit.

David Hyde - Watercolour Demonstration - Dry Drayton Art Group - Tuesday 26th March 2019
Last Tuesday Ros went to a water colour demonstration given by David Hyde at the Dry Drayton Art Group. David is a brilliant artist with a great sense of humour. He provided a giant video screen so no matter where you were sitting you had an excellent view. David is hugely talented, informative and entertaining. Refreshments were included so it was a very enjoyable evening. If anyone is thinking of engaging an artist to give a demonstration Ros can highly recommend David. The Arts Society Granta
Artists and Espionage - Isokon Flats - Deborah Lambert - Tuesday 12th March 2019
Janet, Angela and a friend attended this month's Arts Society Granta lecture about the Lawn Road Flats in Belsize Park, North London. This startling Modernist building was built in 1934 and was an innovation in design, construction and style of living unknown in Great Britain of the day. The building offered a radical new housing concept for the rich and complex lives of the young professionals who inhabited it: in the form of small serviced flats with a communal restaurant and popular club. This ground-breaking building was the brain child of Jack and Molly Prichard and designed by Wells Coates. Its early residents included Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Laszio Moholy Nagy, refugees from the Bauhaus in Germany, Henry Moore the sculptor, the writers Nicholas Monsarrat and Agatha Christie, as well as numerous other writers, intellectuals and civil servants. But this lively bohemian environment had a dark side as it was also home to a nest of Soviet spies including the recruiter and handler of the Cambridge Five. In the 1990s the building was bought by Camden Council and was abandoned and left to become derelict. Now a Grade 1 listed building in 2003 Avanti Architects took it on and returned it to its former glory and it is now managed by Notting Hill Housing Association.
Deborah Lambert, art historian and lecturer, brought to life the history, design and dynamics of this building in the most exciting manner. For more information about the ISOKON flats and to visit the small gallery housed in what was the garage click here.

Fashion and Textile Museum
83 Bermondsey Street, London SE1 3XF
Angela paid an interesting visit to the Fashion and Textile museum's Swinging Sixties Exhibition, bringing back many memories of mid 1960's fashion.
In the mid 1950's a group of radical young designers were at work redefining their concept of youth and "Pop" culture, at the forefront were the young revolutionaries Mary Quant and Terence Conran. Also exhibits of Elizabeth Suters work (1926-2012) who was a well-known illustrator and fashion journalist who covered the Paris collections for British magazines and newspapers. Worth a visit if you are near Bermondsey Street. For more details click here.

The House
Kettles Yard, Castle Hill, Cambridge
An inspiring morning was spend at Kettles Yard Gallery and The House. Currently there are two women artists exhibiting at the gallery Louise Bourgeois (1911 - 2010) who is now considered a major figure in the history of modern art and Julie Mehretu (1970 - ) who is one of the most highly regarded artists working today.
To round the morning off a tour of Jim and Helen Ede's house is very worth while. Bought and restored by Jim and Helen in 1957 this remarkable house is created out of the love of everything that comes under the umbrella of 'art'. From stones and seashells to burnt wood sculptures, primitive carvings to modern works of art many of which were given to the Ede's long before the artist became famous, together with some of their own work. Jim and Helen's appreciation of everything artistic is presented in a manner far ahead of its time, in almost a minimalist style. There is not a picture, sculpture, stone, shell and much more, that is not placed exactly. A wonderful gem. For further information click here.

Mad Men and the Artists - How the Advertising Industry has exploited Fine Art - Lecturer Tony Rawlins
The Arts Society Granta - Tuesday 15th January 2019
Today's lecturer gave us a facinating and entertaining look into the world of advertising using fine art. From Levi Jeans using Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni's David, Pears Soap using Millais' A Child's World to Lego using many and various works of Fine Art to promote their product including the Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Last Supper and Johannas Vemeer's The Girl with a Pearl Earring. Profiting on the general public's ability to recognise famous works of art the advertising industry has created sophisticated, amusing, radical and thought provoking adverts. To conclude Tony left us with the ultimate example of our ability to recognise fine works of art, in this case used to promote the record 70 Million by the Canadian band Hold Your Horses. To view the video click here, see if you can name the works and their artist ….. have fun, we did.

Virginia Woolf exhibition Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge
17th November 2018
This exhibition connects Woolf's writings to many of her artist contemporaries right up modern day artists. Women's suffrage and domesticity of the time feature highly in the ongoing challenge of equality. Although the exhibition interpreted Woolf's writings well I did find some of the works challenging however a very worth while and inspiring visit.

Demonstration - Denise Allen
15th November 2018
Denise started by giving us a demo of a Mortar auxiliaries kit. This has 5 small pots of differing texture mediums. She had put some on paper so it had dried before using it as a background to the painting. She had also used stencils with the mediums achieving exciting results on the paper.
She then gradually built up the picture, using tonal ranges in acrylic paints, some very loose letting them run to give more interest to the painting.
The mediums lent themselves to the picture of an old house in St Lucia.
Interesting demonstration.
